A groundbreaking initiative known as the Recirculate project has commenced this month, with a consortium of eleven companies joining forces to explore innovative business models for the repair, reuse, and recycling of second-life batteries. Supported by a generous €4.9 million grant from the European Union, this ambitious endeavor is set to transform the landscape of sustainable energy solutions.
Among the prominent participants in the project are renowned entities such as Ford Otosan and DHL, along with manufacturers specializing in cutting-edge technologies encompassing artificial intelligence (AI), intelligent logistics solutions, and blockchain technology. Their collaborative efforts over the next three years aim to propel the development of advanced dismantling and sorting technologies for battery recycling, as well as establish a dynamic marketplace dedicated to e-mobility.
At the heart of Recirculate lies the convergence of multiple technological strands. Artificial intelligence will take center stage, empowering automated dismantling processes, while smart logistics systems will revolutionize battery storage and transportation. Additionally, blockchain technology will play a pivotal role in tracking crucial battery data and facilitating the creation of a comprehensive battery marketplace. This marketplace is expected to foster the emergence of novel circular business models, enabling the repair, reuse, and recycling of second-life batteries.
Centria University of Applied Sciences has taken on the responsibility of coordinating the project, concurrently embarking on the development of an AI-powered robotic battery disassembly system. Ford Otosan will provide various batteries crucial to the project and actively participate in the creation of a standardized battery labeling system. DHL, known for its expertise in safe transport and storage, will address both technical and legal aspects pertaining to packs, modules, and cells within the Recirculate initiative.
The consortium further comprises several notable partners, including Probot, Minespider, Eco Stor, Fundacio Eurecat, Libattion, Dafo Vehicle Fire Protection, Iconiq Innovation Limited, Iconiq Innovation Spain, and the Swiss CSEM. With each participant bringing unique expertise to the table, the Recirculate project stands poised to revolutionize the sustainable energy sector.
