PPG has recently inaugurated its Battery Pack Application Center (BPAC) in Tianjin, China. The state-of-the-art facility, built at a cost of $30 million, is equipped with a comprehensive range of capabilities to test and validate PPG coatings technologies, materials, and systems specifically designed for electric vehicle (EV) battery packs. This center aims to facilitate and expedite the development of innovative EV technologies for PPG’s customers.

The establishment of the new application center marks a significant milestone in PPG’s commitment to supporting its customers in the rapidly growing EV battery market in China. By providing customers with a platform to evaluate and validate PPG’s customizable coatings solutions, the facility will assist them in reducing application costs, enhancing battery life, extending driving range, and improving charging speed. Additionally, these coatings are designed to contribute to occupant safety within EVs.

The BPAC will house comprehensive application testing facilities for various PPG technologies, including powder coatings, fire protection coatings, dielectric coatings, adhesives and sealants, surface pre-treatment, and e-coat technologies. With a modular design, the center allows for independent projects to be conducted simultaneously across different application areas. This flexibility enables PPG to develop tailored material and process solutions that cater to the diverse needs of its current and potential customers.

Vincent Robin, PPG’s Global Vice President of Automotive Coatings, expressed the significance of the new BPAC as a vital means to support customers in the Chinese EV battery market. He emphasized that the center will serve as a valuable resource for customers to validate PPG’s coatings solutions, ultimately driving advancements in EV technology.

The establishment of the Battery Pack Application Center showcases PPG’s ongoing commitment to innovation and collaboration with customers, reinforcing its position as a leading provider of coatings technologies for the rapidly evolving EV industry.
