Volvo Buses recently introduced a new all-electric city bus named Luminus specifically designed for the Mexican market. This groundbreaking model will be manufactured locally, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban transport in Mexico. The Luminus is available in various lengths, ranging from 9.7 to 13 meters, and offers diverse battery capacities, spanning from 280 to 470 kWh.
Built on Volvo Buses’ BZL Electric platform, the Luminus is produced at the manufacturer’s facility in Tultitlán, Mexico. With its electric propulsion system and local production, Volvo Buses aims to provide the most environmentally friendly solution for urban transportation in Mexico.
Although Volvo Buses did not disclose the specific range capabilities of each battery and body variant, the company highlighted the optimal utilization of interior space due to the battery pack’s strategic positioning. Additionally, the Luminus boasts exceptional features such as predictive safety systems, a low entrance, and the widest center door available on the market.
One of Volvo Buses’ notable achievements is the development of a closed-loop model, enabling the reuse of electric bus batteries for alternative purposes after their useful life in transportation. Collaborating with Batteryloop and Connected Energy, Volvo Buses demonstrates its commitment to sustainable practices and circular economy principles.
Rafael Kisel, president of Volvo Group Mexico, emphasized their extensive experience in the Mexican market, enabling the provision of comprehensive solutions beyond electric buses. Volvo Buses actively engages in the planning and dimensioning processes, taking into account the unique requirements of each route and operational type. They not only supply buses and charging infrastructure but also offer services, spare parts, and financing for the entire system.
In a departure from their European operations, Volvo Buses will continue manufacturing and offering the complete Luminus vehicle in Mexico. In Europe, the company decided to shift its focus to producing chassis only, allowing for collaboration with external bodybuilders, such as their partnership with MCV, to provide a range of city and intercity buses as well as coaches. Consequently, Volvo Buses plans to close its bus plant in Wroclaw, Poland, as part of this strategic shift.
