Canadian electric utility vehicle manufacturer, Lion Electric, has taken the wraps off its latest all-electric Class 5 truck, the Lion5. Boasting an impressive payload capacity of up to 12,500 lbs., the Lion5 is powered by Lion’s newly developed 800V battery packs, which are engineered and manufactured in-house. The production of Lion5 is scheduled to begin before the end of this year.
Designed to cater to the commercial fleet needs of Lion’s customers, the Lion5 commercial truck cab chassis boasts a range of innovative features desired in GVWR Class 5. It also offers various configurations from 19,500 lbs. up through 26,000 lbs. (Class 6) GVWR. The vehicle can pull up to 2,360 lb-ft of torque and can be equipped with a Gross Combined Weight Rating of up to 30,000 lbs.

Brian Piern, Lion Electric’s Chief Commercial Officer, stated that the Lion5’s design and performance are set to redefine how their customers answer their commercial fleet needs. Piern added that the Lion5’s premier vehicle for last-mile delivery and more is made possible by the success of the Lion6, the company’s first electric truck.
The Lion5 is the first commercial vehicle to feature LionBattery, the company’s newly developed and manufactured in-house battery pack. It’s worth noting that Lion6 electric trucks, used in western Canada by GLS subsidiary Rosenau Transport, were recently ordered by GLS Canada. However, a lawsuit emerged in March between Lion and Nikola Motor over the supply of batteries, with Nikola allegedly breaking a supply deal by taking over Romeo Power.
With the Lion5, Lion Electric is adding to its growing fleet of all-electric vehicles that promise to revolutionize the commercial vehicle market. By manufacturing battery packs in-house, the company aims to deliver exceptional performance, reliability, and efficiency while reducing the total cost of ownership. The Lion5 is a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainable transportation and eco-friendly solutions.
