BYD, a leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, unveiled its latest creation, the Song L concept, at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 18. The all-electric fastback SUV is categorized as a high-end B-class EV and is built on the company’s e-platform 3.0. It comes equipped with CTB (cell-to-body) battery packs and features the LFP Blade battery.
During the unveiling, BYD announced that the premium Song L model would launch later in 2023 and aims to compete with the Tesla Model Y. The car is expected to be priced at around 300,000 yuan (43,600 USD), slightly higher than the Model Y’s starting price of 261,900 yuan (38,000 USD).
The Song L boasts frameless doors, an electric rear spoiler, and the company’s ‘Vanguard Dragon Beauty’ design language, which is targeted towards young consumers. The car is also equipped with a new body control system, DiSus-A, which controls air suspensions. The Song L will be four-wheel drive, but further details have yet to be disclosed. The market release is expected in the second half of 2023.

BYD sold a total of 1,868,543 vehicles in 2022, with the Song SUV series, including the Song PLUS New Energy and Song Pro New Energy, accounting for an impressive 478,811 units sold on its own.
While the dimensions of the Song L have not been revealed, industry experts believe that it will be between the Song PLUS EV and Tang EV in size. On April 11, the Chinese regulator exposed the 2023 version of the Song Plus EV, which features a brand-new design language with more horsepower. The Song L also features a unique design that resembles the new Denza N7, further setting it apart from the Song Plus EV.
As the electric vehicle market in China continues to grow, the competition is becoming increasingly fierce. BYD’s latest creation, the Song L, is a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation and its desire to compete with the industry’s biggest players.
