Maeving, a UK-based electric motorcycle startup, has its sights set on breaking into the US market by the end of 2023 or 2024, according to CEO and founder Tom Stirrup. The company’s first model, the RM1, has already generated buzz in Europe for its budget-friendly price tag of £6,990 (~$8,605 USD) and impressive range of up to 80 miles.

However, in order to meet US Department of Transportation (DOT) standards, Maeving will need to homologate the RM1, which could pose a challenge. Stirrup also acknowledges that the company may face resistance from other competitively-priced electric motorcycle models already on the market.
One such model is the Sondors Metacycle, which is priced at $6,500 and claims to have a top speed of 80 mph and a range of up to 80 miles. While the RM1 also boasts an 80-mile range, its top speed is limited to 45 mph. The two models also have distinct aesthetic differences, with the RM1 featuring a retro café racer style while the Metacycle opts for a futuristic look.

Despite potential challenges, there is a clear need for more affordable electric motorcycle options. The competition between the RM1 and Metacycle could ultimately benefit consumers, with both models offering unique features at accessible price points. As Stirrup notes, “It’s an exciting time for the electric motorcycle market, and we’re eager to see how the RM1 fares against the popular Metacycle.
