Ford is taking a bold step towards a sustainable future by introducing electric school buses. The automaker is now offering a Type A electric school bus package based on its top-selling E-Transit commercial van, and it is set to change the game for the electric van market.
The E-Transit, which was introduced back in 2020 as an all-electric smart workhorse version of its best-selling cargo van, has quickly climbed the sales charts, and Ford has reported a massive 95% control over the electric van market since disclosing E-Transit sales last July. With the E-Transit remaining on top despite several competitors releasing EV vans this past year, it has sold over 6,500 units in the US in 2022, making it the best-selling in Europe and Canada.

Ford has made major deals with industry leaders such as Deutsche Post DHL Group (DHL) and the US Postal Service to supply 9,250 electric mail trucks. Now, the E-Transit is showing its versatility again, this time as an electric school bus. Wanda Young, global chief marketing and experience officer at Ford Pro, recently shared an image of the Type A electric school bus on her Twitter account based on the E-Transit powertrain at Work Truck Week in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Ford has made history by becoming the first full-line automaker in North America to offer a Type A school bus on an electric powertrain. The E-Transit has already proven itself to be a game-changer, saving over 745,000 gallons of gas after its first year on the market. This equates to over 4.3 million kg of CO2 saved from entering Earth’s atmosphere. Compared to traditional gas-powered delivery vans, Ford says driving its low-roof E-Transit can save 57% of the CO2 output over the vehicle’s lifetime.
