Ford is set to introduce its Mustang Mach-E electric model with LFP battery cells in Europe by the end of 2023. The manufacturer has not yet disclosed technical specifications or prices for the SUV with the new battery variant, but has made a surprising statement regarding charging performance.

The move follows Ford’s announcement for North America, with both versions of the vehicle being built in Mexico. The availability of the LFP batteries will determine how many vehicles Ford can produce, with the supplier being CATL.

Using lower-cost lithium iron phosphate batteries should enable Ford to ramp up production of the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning more quickly, and also reduce dependence on raw materials such as nickel and cobalt. LFP batteries offer a cost advantage and better cycle stability, although their energy density is lower, resulting in shorter ranges than NCM cells.

Ford’s statement that LFP cells “tolerate more frequent and faster charging” is surprising, as currently available EVs with LFP cells tend to have lower charging performance than NCM cell variants. However, technical measures could improve the cold tolerance of LFP batteries.

Ford’s recent $3.5 billion investment in an LFP battery cell plant in Michigan indicates a strong commitment to using this technology. The plant will be owned and operated by Ford, with CATL providing the technology and know-how.

Customers will be able to choose their electric vehicle and battery performance based on their individual mobility needs, with the added benefit of potentially lower selling prices for Ford’s EVs. The move towards LFP batteries highlights the industry’s growing focus on sustainable and affordable battery technology.
