Nio, a Shanghai-based company, has recently announced the appointment of Tom Wharfe as Head of Brand and User Development for the UK market. Wharfe is a highly experienced automotive manager who has previously worked for BMW, Volkswagen, and Rolls-Royce.
In addition to this news, Nio also announced that it will be launching its Power Swap Stations (PSS) in the UK in 2023, signaling the company’s imminent entry into the UK market. No exact date has been given for this launch.
“I’m very proud to be a part of this exciting company and can’t wait to introduce this innovative Brand to the UK market. Keep a look out for more to come,” Wharfe wrote on social media.
Nio has plans to expand its presence in the European market by the end of 2023, with a goal of operating 120 Power Swap Stations (PSS) in the region. Currently, the company operates 10 PSS in Europe and over 1,300 in China, with a target of having 1,700 PSS in China by the end of the year.
The United Kingdom was previously identified as a potential market for expansion, along with France, Spain, Hungary, Switzerland, and Italy, as part of Nio’s plan to enter 25 countries by 2025.
In addition to expanding in Europe, Nio’s CEO, William Li, has hinted at the company’s plans to enter the North American market. Nio already has an R&D office in San Jose, California and recently leased a 200,000 square meter building for a 10 year contract. The company has also recently advertised job openings related to US safety car compliance in Silicon Valley.
