More than 100 companies including a number of car manufacturers are urging the Australian federal government to bring one million electric vehicles on the road in the next five years.
The push from a company that covers the retail industry, banking, and even agriculture wants a series of policies for using EVs for both commercial and personal use.
Some well-known companies from the 100 companies are the BMW Group, BYD, Microsoft, Uber, and many others.
After years of government neglect of the EV sector, Australia now needs strong policies to reduce transport emissions, said Electric Vehicle Council chief executive Behyad Jafari, citing The Driven.
Not only that, Jafari also said that this policy can ensure the country can take part in the global opportunities provided by EV.
“If we get this EV Strategy right, the opportunities are huge. We could employ tens of thousands of Australians to make batteries, chargers, cars, buses and trucks,” Jafari further said.
It will also reduce pollution from transportation and do our fair share to fight climate change.
“A strong national EV strategy with policies targeted at the transport and logistics sector will allow the retail sector to accelerate its contribution to reducing transport emissions,” said Ikea’s fulfillment sourcing manager, Brendan Groll.
In addition, before this year’s federal election, Labor pledged 3.8 million EVs on Australian roads by 2030.
The Labor Party is currently requesting submissions to the National Electric Vehicle Strategy to refine which policies will be taken to Parliament.
