Renault has launched the Renault R5 Turbo 3E concept car with an electric drivetrain and aggressive modern styling to the old platform.
The R5 Turbo 3E is the follow-up to the R5 Turbo and R5 Turbo 2 production models from the 80s. This concept electric vehicle comes with a video game-inspired design and paint reminiscent of the Doppler effect. The Renault R5 Turbo itself is the hot hatch Renault they have sold for decades.
The R5 Turbo 3E comes with an output of 375 hp (280 kW / 380 PS) from a set of rear-mounted electric motors, which is double the output of the ICE-powered model. With a massive 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque transmitted to the rear wheels, the concept is a “pure drifter”.
The concept car is powered by a 42kWh battery and allows the tiny hatchback to go from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 125mph.
Renault doesn’t announce range figures but a full charge takes just 2 hours via a 380V charger. The battery weighs 520 kg (1,146 lb) but the rest of the vehicle weighs in at 980 kg (2,160 lb), making it quite light for an EV.
The concept measures 4,006 mm (157.7 inches), 2,020 mm (79.5 inches) wide and 1,320 mm (52 ââinches) high, with a wheelbase of 2,540 mm (96.5 inches).
This is an indication of the future of Renault. The brand is aggressive with a target of full electification by 2030, and this concept shows that they are serious about moving forward.
