Giga Shanghai reached a production milestone by launching its one millionth electric vehicle off the production line. This achievement is quite remarkable and was achieved less than three years after the factory started production in 2019

Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared the milestone on his Twitter account, saying, “Congratulations Giga Shanghai on making the millionth car! Total Tesla built now is over 3 million.”

Giga Shanghai is China’s first wholly foreign-owned electric vehicle manufacturing project. It currently produces the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y SUV.

Giga Shanghai is Tesla’s first Gigafactory outside the US and is prioritized for the Chinese local market and export needs. Tesla itself has built a second Gigafactory outside the US, which is located in Berlin, Germany.

Construction of the Giga Shanghai began January 7, 2019, and delivered the first production Model 3 in December 2019. The initial capacity of the Giga Shanghai reached 250,000 units by the end of 2020 and to more than 450,000 units by 2021.

In 2021, Tesla delivered electric vehicles from Giga Shanghai to reach 484,130 units, up 235 percent compared to 2020. This number represents 51.7 percent of Tesla’s total 2021 global deliveries.

The Shanghai Giga’s current production capacity exceeds 750,000 units, according to Tesla’s second-quarter earnings report released on July 20. This number makes Giga Shanghai more than 650,000 units of the California factory.

According to several media reports, Tesla plans to increase production capacity at the Shanghai Giga to around 1.1-1.2 million units.
