Andrej Karpathy, Tesla Director of AI announces he’s leaving the company

Tesla, has just left its engineer leader. He is Andrej Karpathy who is the head of the autopilot development division. Launching from Engadget, Friday (15/7/2022), Andrej Karpathy resigned from his post after half a decade in office. He announced his resignation on Twitter.

In a tweet on his Twitter account, Andrej Karpathy made a statement that he was leaving Tesla and thanked him for the support he had while working there.

“Happy to help Tesla to achieve its goals over the past 5 years and the difficult decision to part ways,” Karpathy wrote on Twitter. He also added that he wanted to see the team he left at this time can continue the baton and good momentum after his departure from the Tesla company.

“I have no concrete plans for what will happen next, but I would like to spend more time reviewing my long-term passion around technical work in AI, open source, and education.” Add tweet from @karpathy account. Tesla CEO Elon Musk also replied to Karpathy’s tweet by thanking him for all he had given the company.

Karpathy’s departure follows the closure of Tesla’s office in San Mateo, California, where it houses a data annotation team that is helping the company improve driver assistance technology. According to records from the California Department of Employment Development, 229 people were fired from the office. Karpathy, who holds the title of senior director of AI, works at Tesla’s former headquarters in Palo Alto, California and reports directly to Elon Musk.

Andrej Karpathy is not the only Tesla executive who has decided to leave the company. A senior director focused on DEI is also rumored to have left. In addition, Chris Rollins, senior software manager at Tesla’s energy division, has also reportedly quit. Kdan Kristen Kavanaugh, senior director focused on diversity and inclusion, stepped down last month.
