JLR is reportedly delaying the launch of a battery-electric version of its Defender SUV, with the next generation of the off-road model now expected in the early 2030s rather than 2028 or 2029. The Times reported that the delay is linked to limitations of the Defender’s current platform, which was not designed to accommodate a fully electric powertrain.
The move would push the full-size electric Defender further into the future as JLR continues to develop its broader electrification strategy.
Current Defender Platform Not Designed for EVs
The current Defender was introduced in 2020 and is built on JLR’s D7x platform. The architecture features a rigid aluminium structure developed specifically for the Defender’s off-road requirements and is engineered for internal combustion and hybrid powertrains.
JLR considers the platform too complex for a fully electric drivetrain. One of the reported limitations is insufficient underbody space for a battery large enough to provide the required driving range.
As a result, JLR plans to introduce a battery-electric Defender only with the next generation of the vehicle, which will use a different platform.
The next-generation Defender had reportedly been targeted for 2028/29 but has now been pushed to the early 2030s.
Electric Defender Faces Wider JLR Delays
The reported delay comes as JLR’s wider transition to battery-electric vehicles continues to progress more slowly than originally planned.
The Jaguar I-Pace, which was discontinued in 2024, remains the group’s only battery-electric production model to have reached the market so far. Several subsequent electric vehicle programs have experienced delays.
JLR Switches to Digital Charging Services for EV Charging Across Europe
The electric Jaguar Type 01, for example, is now expected this year despite previously being scheduled to arrive as early as 2025.
JLR’s first electric Range Rover is also still awaiting its market launch. The Range Rover Electric was originally announced several years ago, and journalists tested a prototype in 2025. Its market launch was officially postponed to 2026, but the production model has yet to arrive.
2030 Electrification Target Under Pressure
The Defender delay could complicate JLR’s objective of offering fully electric models across each of its four brands by 2030: Jaguar, Range Rover, Defender and Discovery.
The company’s current brand structure separates Range Rover, Defender and Discovery, which were previously grouped under the Land Rover name.
The delay is also reportedly connected to cost-cutting measures introduced under JLR CEO P.B. Balaji, who joined Tata, JLR’s Indian parent company, in November 2025.

The automaker has faced a challenging period, including the impact of U.S. tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and the difficulty of passing the full cost of those tariffs on to customers in the U.S. market.
Smaller Electric Defender Still Planned
The reported delay does not affect plans for a smaller electric Defender, often referred to as the “Baby Defender.”
The existing Defender range consists of the three-door Defender 90, the five-door Defender 110 and the larger Defender 130. A smaller model would sit below these vehicles and target a broader lifestyle-oriented SUV market.
The Baby Defender is expected to use JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), the platform also planned for the electric Range Rover GT and electric Range Rover Velar.

The smaller Defender is reportedly targeted for 2027, although JLR has not officially confirmed the launch date or the model’s final name.
If introduced as planned, the smaller electric model would give the Defender brand a battery-electric offering several years before the next-generation full-size Defender.
