UK battery recycling company Altilium has deployed ReGenTrace AI, a cloud-based analytics and traceability platform developed by its subsidiary Materia AI, to support the expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling operations.
The company said the platform will become the digital operating system for its recycling facilities, helping automate battery analysis, optimize processing and improve traceability across the battery materials supply chain.
AI to Optimize Battery Recycling
ReGenTrace AI combines machine learning, computer vision and advanced analytics to identify incoming battery chemistries, manufacturers, cell formats, state of health and potential safety risks before recycling begins.
The platform also predicts the composition of black mass—the material produced after battery processing—including concentrations of lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graphite, allowing recycling operations to adjust refining conditions and production schedules in real time.
Altilium said the system will support the scale-up of its ACT3 commercial battery recycling plant in Plymouth by improving throughput, reducing energy consumption and increasing recovery of critical battery materials.
Dr. Christian Marston, chief operating officer of Altilium, said digital technologies will play an important role in building domestic battery supply chains.
“The UK’s leadership in battery technologies will depend on more than new factories. It will require intelligent, connected supply chains.”
“By integrating ReGenTrace AI into our commercial operations, we’re combining advanced recycling with digital intelligence to help build a resilient, traceable and circular supply chain for critical battery materials.”
Supporting Battery Passports
Beyond process optimization, ReGenTrace AI provides digital traceability by linking end-of-life batteries with recycled materials produced later in the supply chain.
Altilium said the platform is designed to support future Battery Passport requirements by providing information on recycled content, material origin and carbon footprint.
The company also plans to integrate the platform with its recell.store marketplace, enabling automated battery valuation and connecting battery collection, testing, logistics and recycling into a single digital ecosystem.
