Renault has started deploying Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence assistant to vehicles equipped with its openR link multimedia system, introducing enhanced in-car voice capabilities through an over-the-air software update.
The rollout began on June 15, 2026, and is being introduced gradually across Renault’s European lineup and selected international markets. The optional upgrade replaces Google Assistant at no additional cost for compatible vehicles.
Gemini Expands In-Car Voice Capabilities
According to Renault, Gemini is designed to support more natural conversations by understanding contextual and multi-step requests without requiring drivers to use predefined voice commands.
The AI assistant can control a range of vehicle functions, including climate settings, navigation, radio, and vehicle preferences. It also provides access to live electric vehicle range information to assist with route planning.
Unlike Android Auto, which relies on a connected smartphone for many functions, Gemini operates directly within the vehicle’s infotainment system, allowing users to access vehicle-specific information and controls through the built-in platform.
Update Available for Existing Vehicles
The software upgrade is also being made available to compatible vehicles already on the road.
Renault introduced the openR link multimedia system in 2022 with the launch of the Mégane E-Tech Electric, and the Gemini update is being extended across the existing compatible fleet through over-the-air software delivery.
The company said future updates will introduce Gemini Live, a feature that will support more natural conversations, including the ability to interrupt responses, issue multiple requests during a single interaction without repeating the wake phrase, and switch languages during an ongoing conversation.
Support for Multiple Languages
At launch, Gemini supports 13 languages, including English, French, German, Swedish, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian, and Turkish.
Renault said additional languages will be added in future software updates as the platform continues to evolve. Because the system is delivered through over-the-air updates, compatible vehicles will receive new features automatically without requiring customers to visit a dealership.
