Wayve, Nissan and Uber have joined Partners for Automated Vehicle Education UK (PAVE UK) as the organisation’s first industry members, supporting efforts to improve public understanding of autonomous vehicle technology ahead of planned commercial deployments in the United Kingdom.
The move comes as Wayve and Uber prepare to launch autonomous vehicle trials in London later this year.
Expanding Public Engagement Efforts
PAVE UK was established in 2024 by a group of public-sector and academic organisations, including the UK Department for Transport, the Department for Business and Trade, the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV), Transport for West Midlands, and WMG at the University of Warwick.
The initiative aims to provide evidence-based information about autonomous vehicles, including their capabilities, benefits and limitations.
According to PAVE UK, more than 20,000 members of the public have already participated in its outreach activities, which include educational resources and a virtual reality self-driving vehicle experience.
Industry Members Join Education Initiative
With the addition of Wayve, Nissan and Uber, PAVE UK plans to expand collaboration between industry, government and academia as autonomous vehicle technologies move closer to commercial deployment.
The organisation said it will work with its new members to communicate information about the safety, operation and potential applications of self-driving systems.
The group also plans to develop recommendations and principles related to responsible deployment practices, including the role of safety operators during initial testing and commercial rollout phases.
These recommendations are expected to be shared with policymakers and industry stakeholders.
Nissan Brings Autonomous Driving Experience
Nissan’s participation builds on a series of autonomous driving research programmes led by the company’s UK technical centre.
The automaker has previously been involved in projects including HumanDrive, ServCity and evolvAD, which have focused on testing autonomous vehicle technologies under real-world conditions in the UK.
The company has been one of the more active participants in government-supported autonomous mobility research initiatives over the past several years.
Focus on Public Understanding
Industry participants highlighted the importance of public engagement as autonomous vehicle technologies move toward wider deployment.
“At Uber, safety is front and centre of everything we do. Communities and cities have to be part of the conversation from the start if we’re going to realise the long-term benefits of autonomous technology. This collaboration with PAVE UK is an important step in bringing AVs to London’s streets safely and responsibly,” said Alex Zelubowski, UK Head of Autonomous Mobility Operations at Uber.
London Emerging as Key Testing Market
London is expected to play an important role in the next phase of autonomous vehicle deployment in Europe.
Wayve and Uber have announced plans to begin autonomous vehicle operations in the city later this year, while several other companies are evaluating opportunities within the UK market as regulatory frameworks continue to evolve.
PAVE UK said its objective remains focused on helping the public understand how autonomous vehicles work, while encouraging informed discussion about their deployment and potential role within future transportation systems.
