Rivian has released a new software update that adds performance enhancements, expanded features and a smartwatch-based vehicle key to its R1S sport utility vehicle and R1T pickup, extending capabilities across both first- and second-generation models.
The update, version 2026.03, introduces a dedicated Apple Watch application that allows drivers to control key vehicle functions without carrying a physical key or smartphone. For first-generation owners—who previously lacked full digital key support—the app enables locking and unlocking by tapping the watch screen and, when connected via Bluetooth, allows the vehicle to be placed into drive with the app active in the foreground. Second-generation models already support proximity-based digital keys with automatic locking and unlocking.

Rivian also expanded its Sport Mode feature to base Dual-Motor variants, including vehicles equipped with either NMC or LFP battery packs. Previously limited to higher-performance configurations, Sport Mode now provides enhanced power delivery and faster acceleration across a broader portion of the lineup. Compatible vehicles can also maintain a “Standard” ride height in Sport Mode, rather than automatically lowering the suspension as before.
Launch Mode, designed for maximum acceleration from a standstill, is now available on additional models. The feature previously debuted on second-generation Quad-Motor vehicles but now extends to first-generation Quad-Motor models and Performance Dual-Motor versions across both generations. Activation requires selecting Sport Mode, pressing a flag icon on the display, and simultaneously applying the brake and accelerator.

The update further refines suspension behavior, adding a new “Lower” setting to Kneel Mode, which reduces ride height when occupants enter or exit the vehicle. The setting lowers the vehicle roughly an additional inch compared with the previous “Low” position, depending on configuration and tire size.
Driver-assistance systems have also been adjusted so that changing drive modes or vehicle settings will no longer disengage Highway Assist or Universal Hands-Free features. Rivian said the update includes several improvements for cold-weather operation, including new indicators showing energy used to warm the battery and graphics that display temporarily unavailable range while the battery reaches optimal temperature.
The company added that battery preconditioning during charging has been made more efficient, improving range recovery and performance in low temperatures.
