Hyundai Mobis said on Jan. 21 it is developing a 5G wireless communication-based, antenna-integrated telematics solution as part of efforts to strengthen its electronics business and expand its role in next-generation mobility technologies.
The solution, known as a multi-functional telematics control unit (MTCU), is built on 5G connectivity and supports a wide range of vehicle services, including navigation, accident and theft detection, remote vehicle control and high-speed data transmission. Telematics systems combine information and communication technologies with automobiles and are increasingly viewed as a core component of connected and software-defined vehicles.

According to Hyundai Mobis, 5G-based telematics enables advanced services that are difficult to support with existing 4G systems, such as high-precision map updates, remote control for autonomous driving functions and ultra-high-definition media streaming. Current 4G-based platforms are largely limited to over-the-air software updates, infotainment streaming and basic vehicle-to-home connectivity.
The newly developed MTCU integrates antenna functions directly into an internal controller, removing the need for external, protruding antennas and allowing for a cleaner vehicle exterior design. Hyundai Mobis said it plans to improve its competitiveness in global orders by combining the new communication technology with its established telematics development capabilities and mass-production experience. The company is also collaborating with several mobile communication modem specialists, including domestic partners, to accelerate development.

The telematics market is expanding as consumers increasingly expect vehicles to offer smartphone-like functionality and personalized digital experiences. Hyundai Mobis cited industry projections showing the global telematics controller market growing from 64 million units this year to 77 million units by 2030.
Hyundai Mobis showcased the new product at CES 2026 in the United States this month, using the event to promote the technology to global automakers. “We will complete product development by the first half of this year for rapid market entry in the next-generation connected car service sector and secure market leadership in the global market,” said Jung Su-kyung, head of the company’s Electronics Business Unit.
