The government of New South Wales has opened the latest round of its electric vehicle fleet incentives programme, making more than A$5 million available to businesses seeking to electrify their vehicle fleets.
The scheme is designed to support businesses purchasing or leasing up to 15 battery electric vehicles and installing associated charging infrastructure. Funding is available across a wide range of vehicle types, from passenger cars to heavy commercial vehicles, although the incentives do not cover the full cost of each purchase.
Under the latest round, the New South Wales government said incentives include A$5,000 for passenger vehicles and SUVs priced at A$40,000 or more, A$5,000 to A$8,000 for light commercial vehicles weighing between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes, and, for the first time, A$10,000 to A$50,000 for heavy commercial vehicles weighing between 3.5 and 23 tonnes.
The programme will also cover up to 50% of the cost per charging port, capped at A$60,000 depending on vehicle or charger type. Funding will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and will remain open until the funds are exhausted or until May 2026.
Previous rounds of the programme have awarded more than A$46 million, supporting the purchase of over 5,300 battery electric vehicles and around 2,400 chargers. The state government said these incentives have accounted for about 5.2% of all new EV registrations in New South Wales.
“By extending these incentives to eligible heavy vehicles, the NSW Government is enabling businesses to make deep, impactful cuts to their transport emissions and accelerate the state’s drive toward net zero,” said Terry Niemeier, director of transport electrification for the New South Wales government. “By making the switch to electric vehicles more accessible and cost-effective, we’re not only improving air quality but also driving economic growth and innovation in the transportation sector,” he added.
