Prasarana Malaysia has unveiled detailed plans to electrify its bus fleet as part of its Sustainability Blueprint, committing to introduce more than 1,100 electric buses between 2025 and 2030 and achieve a fully electric fleet by 2037. The initiative supports Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap, which aims to accelerate low-carbon mobility across the country.
The operator currently runs 15 electric buses on the Sunway BRT system and intends to add 150 electric feeder buses for the LRT Shah Alam Line. Prasarana said it expects to receive its final batch of diesel buses by March next year, after which its bus purchases will shift entirely to electric models. The Sustainability Blueprint targets a 45% reduction in operational carbon emissions by 2030 through fleet electrification, expanded solar installations and improved energy efficiency.

Prasarana has begun rolling out solar infrastructure as part of its decarbonisation strategy. Solar panels were installed at the BRT Sunway station and six other locations in 2023, with plans to equip 75 additional rail and bus depots, hubs and stations over the next three years.
The company is also investing in workforce training to prepare employees for the introduction of electric vehicles. Training modules covering EV handling, fire safety and operational readiness will be incorporated into its safety programme, “My Risk, My Responsibility,” which aims to promote a stronger safety culture across the organisation.

“Competency will be a key issue in everything we do,” said Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Nasir Ahmad. “Staff will be trained first, from bus crew members to those responsible for understanding fire suppression for electric buses. We will not start electric bus operations unless we are fully prepared.”
