Nissan will display the Ao-Solar Extender, an extendable roof-mounted solar system, on its Sakura electric vehicle (EV) at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. The system is capable of generating enough solar electricity to provide up to 3,000 km (1,864 miles) of driving annually, according to the automaker.
The solar array operates while the vehicle is parked or in motion. A fixed panel collects sunlight during driving, while a second extendable panel increases surface area when the vehicle is stationary.

The system can generate up to 500 Watts when fully extended and up to 300 Watts while driving. Nissan said the design integrates with the Sakura’s roofline to maintain aerodynamics and adds minimal drag.
The company noted that the system could reduce reliance on conventional charging infrastructure for short-distance trips. The extendable panel also provides shade when parked, which may help reduce cabin temperatures and air conditioning use. Nissan said the system could also function as an emergency power source in case of natural disasters.

The Ao-Solar Extender is part of Nissan’s Re:Nissan strategy, which emphasizes sustainable mobility and technological innovation. The project originated from a 2021 internal idea contest and is being developed for future commercial release, though a launch date has not yet been announced.
The system will be featured in the Tokyo Future Tour “City Life Zone” at the Japan Mobility Show, which begins October 30, 2025, with press days starting October 29.
