Representatives of Solaris Bus & Coach and the Municipality of Gdańsk have signed a contract for the delivery of 30 electric buses, marking a significant step in the city’s transition to zero-emission public transport. The order comprises 18 units of 12-metre Solaris Urbino electric buses and 12 articulated Solaris Urbino 18 models, which will be operated by Gdańskie Autobusy i Tramwaje.
The buses are scheduled for delivery by September 2026. The 12-metre vehicles will feature 600 kWh batteries, while the articulated versions will be equipped with 800 kWh energy storage systems, enabling extended operation on a single charge. Each bus will have two charging sockets—one above the front right wheel arch and another on the left side—to facilitate depot maintenance and daily charging.
Andrzej Sienkiewicz, Sales Director at Solaris Bus & Coach, highlighted the modular design of the buses, noting that the drive components are placed on the roof, eliminating the need for a traditional engine tower. “This solution optimizes passenger space and increases capacity,” he said. The 12-metre buses can carry up to 70 passengers, while the articulated versions accommodate up to 107 passengers.
The Solaris Urbino electric buses for Gdańsk will feature fully low-floor designs, air-conditioning, and comply with the latest safety standards, including GSR2 and cybersecurity regulations. Key systems include driver distraction and fatigue monitoring, pedestrian and cyclist warning systems, and blind-spot detection for cyclists. Advanced driver assistance technologies, such as an intelligent speed assistant and modern electric mirrors, are also included to enhance safety and comfort.
Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, Mayor of Gdańsk, said the order represents a milestone in the city’s public transport modernization. “For the first time, passengers in Gdańsk will experience the comfort of zero-emission buses,” she said. Solaris has a longstanding cooperation with Gdańsk, dating back to 1997, with the last delivery of buses to the city in 2009.
