Hesai Technology said it has been designated the exclusive short-range lidar supplier for Motional’s all-electric Ioniq 5 robotaxi, cementing a partnership that has spanned more than two years.
The agreement highlights the growing role of lidar in ensuring safety and performance for Level 4 autonomous vehicles, which are designed to operate without human intervention in most driving conditions. Motional, a developer of driverless technology backed by Hyundai and Aptiv, is preparing to scale robotaxi services across multiple cities through partnerships with global ride-hailing platforms.
“Lidar serves as the ‘eye’ of an autonomous vehicle,” Hesai said, noting that its solutions have undergone third-party safety and cybersecurity testing by TÜV Rheinland and DEKRA. The company has secured key certifications, including ISO/SAE 21434 for cybersecurity and ISO 26262 for product functional safety.
“We are honored to support Motional’s mission to scale safe and reliable robotaxis,” said Bob in den Bosch, senior vice president of global sales at Hesai. “Our team is committed to providing industry-leading lidar solutions that meet the highest standards of safety and security.”
Hesai, which has customers in over 40 countries across North America, Europe, and Asia, said the partnership underscores its role in advancing global autonomous mobility. The company added that it will continue working with automakers worldwide to integrate lidar into next-generation vehicles.
