Bedrock Robotics, a startup founded by former Waymo and Segment engineers, has emerged from stealth mode with an $80 million funding round led by Eclipse and 8VC. The company is focused on building retrofit autonomous systems for construction and other worksite vehicles.
The startup aims to modernize existing vehicle fleets by equipping them with advanced sensors, computing platforms, and intelligent software that can adapt to dynamic environments and execute tasks continuously. Bedrock says its technology is designed to understand project objectives and operate in real-time under changing conditions, offering a scalable automation solution for off-road applications.
The founding team includes CEO Boris Sofman, formerly head of Waymo’s self-driving trucks division and co-founder of consumer robotics company Anki. Other co-founders include Kevin Peterson, now CTO, and Ajay Gummalla and Tom Eliaz, both serving as vice presidents of engineering. Their collective experience spans robotics, AI, and autonomy in both on-road and off-road contexts.
Bedrock joins a growing segment of companies exploring autonomous systems for construction, mining, and industrial sites—sectors that often present fewer regulatory and technical constraints than public roads. Recent activity in the space includes Pronto’s acquisition of rival SafeAI, as well as continued developments from companies like Kodiak Robotics, Polymath Robotics, Overland AI, and Forterra.
Currently, Bedrock is piloting its systems at construction sites across Arkansas, Arizona, Texas, and California in collaboration with four corporate partners: Sundt Construction, Zachry Construction Corporation, Champion Site Prep Inc., and Capitol Aggregates Inc. The company’s approach signals a broader industry trend toward applying autonomy in controlled, off-highway environments where safety, efficiency, and labor challenges intersect.
