BYD, the Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, has entered the passenger car market in Benin, marking a significant step in its ongoing expansion across Africa. The company introduced its two electric vehicle (EV) models—the Yuan Plus SUV and the Seagull compact hatchback—at a brand launch event held in Cotonou on April 24, 2025.
The launch, conducted in partnership with local distributor CFAO Group, also saw the unveiling of a new after-sales service center and showroom in the city, reinforcing BYD’s commitment to building a comprehensive infrastructure to support its vehicles in the region.
This move into Benin further solidifies BYD’s growing footprint in Africa, where it has now entered 16 countries and regions. Over the past year, the company has also introduced its models in Tunisia, Ecuador, Madagascar, and Ethiopia, continuing its push to become a major player in the African electric vehicle market.
Since shifting its focus from internal combustion engine vehicles to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in March 2022, BYD has been expanding its product offerings to meet the increasing demand for sustainable transportation solutions across the continent. The company’s expansion in Benin is expected to play a key role in its broader strategy to promote electric mobility and increase its market share in Africa.
