The 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning received mixed results in the latest crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), falling short of the ratings required to earn a Top Safety Pick award.

While the electric pickup was rated “good” in the category of front crash prevention: pedestrian, as well as for its seat belt reminder system, the IIHS gave it lower scores in other areas.

The F-150 Lightning received a “marginal” rating for child seat latch ease of use, an “acceptable” rating for its headlights, and a “poor” rating in the moderate overlap front crash test.

According to the IIHS, the truck provided solid protection for the driver but less so for rear-seat passengers. “In the 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning, measurements taken from the rear dummy showed a high risk of not only chest injuries, but also injuries to the head or neck,” the institute said. It added that the lap belt shifted from the pelvis to the abdomen, raising the risk of internal injuries.

The results mean the Lightning does not qualify for either the Top Safety Pick or the higher-tier Top Safety Pick+ award. Both require stronger performance across crash categories, including good or acceptable ratings in the moderate overlap test.
