Hyundai begun developing a small electric vehicle for India market

Hyundai has reportedly been preparing a small electric vehicle for the Indian market as they focus on bringing more premium models to the country starting this year.

Hyundai India Director of Sales Marketing and Services Tarun Garg did not comment on when the company would launch the small electric vehicle in question in India. Garg just said the timing of the launch of the small electric vehicle had to be precise.

“The ecosystem should be ready, we should have enough charging,” he said.

The small electric vehicle is part of Hyundai’s plan to invest 512 million US dollars to launch at least six electric vehicles in India by 2028.

The adoption of electric vehicles is becoming important in India as the country has some of the most polluted cities in the world.

India’s electric vehicle market is small in comparison to the sheer size of its population. The electric vehicle market in India accounts for less than 1 percent of total car sales.

Hyundai will launch premium models starting with the Ioniq 5 electric crossover this year in India.

Previously, Hyundai’s electric vehicle portfolio in India was only the Kona EV, which was launched in 2019. However, the high price has made sales of the Kona EV low despite the lack of public charging facilities in India.
