Volkswagen will reintroduce the ID. Buzz in the United States during the first half of 2027 as a 2028 model year vehicle, extending a delay that means the electric van will skip a second consecutive model year in the market.
Volkswagen of America informed dealers of the revised timeline on September 24, according to Automotive News. The change comes several months after Volkswagen announced in May that the ID. Buzz would return for the 2027 model year, with deliveries expected to begin in autumn 2026.
Updates Planned for 2028 Model Year
Volkswagen described the 2028 model year as a consolidation of several improvements that had originally been planned for the skipped model year.
The updates include NACS charging through an adapter, one-pedal driving, physical steering-wheel buttons and the Tourer trim aimed at customers interested in camping. Volkswagen said the Tourer is based on the European Good Night Package.
Additional changes include updated software, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality and support for a digital vehicle key.
Physical steering-wheel buttons and V2L are already part of an update announced for the European ID. Buzz in April 2026. The European V2L system can supply up to 2 kW to external devices through an adapter connected to the vehicle’s charging port.
Volkswagen has not disclosed the V2L output for the U.S. version. The company also has not provided details on potential changes to the drivetrain, battery capacity or driving range.
ID. Buzz Faces Challenging U.S. Launch
The ID. Buzz is produced exclusively by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hanover, Germany, and first arrived in the U.S. in November 2024. The model launched with an EPA-rated range of 234 miles, or approximately 380 km, and a starting price of just under $60,000.
According to Automotive News, the ID. Buzz was Volkswagen’s most expensive model in the U.S. lineup at the time. Analysts cited by the publication said its price and range limited its appeal.
The electric van recorded 6,140 U.S. deliveries in 2025, its first full year on the market. Automotive News reported that two sales stops, two recalls and higher U.S. import tariffs introduced in spring 2025 affected sales.
InsideEVs reported that the ID. Buzz did not qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. The U.S. EV market subsequently faced broader changes following the end of the incentive.
Volkswagen confirmed in December 2025 that it would skip the 2026 model year in the U.S. following an assessment of market conditions, while retaining the model for the market.
During the first half of 2026, Volkswagen sold another 2,481 ID. Buzz vehicles in the U.S. Automotive News estimated that inventories of the 2025 model were approaching the end of their sales cycle, while Cars.com listed 38 new ID. Buzz vehicles nationwide at the time of the report.
Volkswagen’s U.S. EV Lineup Narrows
The delayed ID. Buzz return comes as Volkswagen’s U.S. electric vehicle lineup undergoes further changes.
In April 2026, Volkswagen of America CEO Kjell Gruner said new EV models would not arrive in the U.S. until the end of the decade. Volkswagen headquarters in Wolfsburg subsequently confirmed the direction, with the future SSP electric vehicle platform expected to form the basis of those models.
Until then, Volkswagen has said the ID.4 and ID. Buzz will remain central to its U.S. electric vehicle portfolio.
Volkswagen stopped production of the ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant in April 2026 as the facility shifted its focus toward the next generation of the Atlas SUV. The automaker said existing 2026 model-year inventory would be sufficient to meet ID.4 demand through 2027.
Volkswagen announced a future North American version of the ID.4 in May 2026. In Europe, the successor to the ID.4 is scheduled to make its world premiere next month under the ID. Tiguan name, although it has not been confirmed whether the model will also be sold in the U.S.
Volkswagen Reaffirms ID. Buzz Commitment
Despite the delay, Volkswagen continues to describe the ID. Buzz as part of its long-term U.S. strategy.
A Volkswagen spokesperson told InsideEVs that the ID. Buzz remains an important part of the company’s U.S. portfolio and that Volkswagen continues to support its future in the market.
The automaker said additional details about the 2028 model year will be announced in the coming months.
