Edmonton International Airport (YEG) has partnered with Toyota Canada to bring 100 Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles to Alberta roadways. The groundbreaking initiative seeks to reduce carbon emissions and aligns with YEG’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, making it the first fleet of hydrogen-powered zero-emission vehicles in the region.
Myron Keehn, President & CEO of Edmonton International Airport, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to attract investment and kick-start the Edmonton Metro Region’s ambitious “5,000 Vehicle Challenge.” This challenge aims to have 5,000 hydrogen and hydrogen dual-fuel vehicles on the roads of Alberta by 2028, showcasing the power of emissions-free hydrogen fuels and contributing to the region’s clean fuels journey.
To ensure a reliable supply of hydrogen for the fuel cell vehicles and support the decarbonization efforts of the Airport City Sustainability Campus, YEG has been actively coordinating collaborative initiatives with various fleets and fuel suppliers. Additionally, the airport has forged a partnership with Air Products, the world’s largest hydrogen producer, to establish an interim mobile hydrogen refueling station at the airport.
Stephen Beatty, Vice President, Corporate, Toyota Canada Inc., praised Edmonton International Airport for its pioneering efforts in introducing hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles to their fleet. He emphasized Toyota’s belief that hydrogen will play a crucial role alongside other sustainable technologies in reducing carbon emissions in Canada. YEG’s fleet of Toyota Mirai FCEVs, combined with on-site hydrogen fueling infrastructure, is expected to accelerate the use of hydrogen in Alberta and bolster the growth of the province’s hydrogen economy.
