The much-anticipated release of the 2024 Volvo EX90 EV SUV promises to include a comprehensive suite of advanced safety technologies, free of subscription service fees, as reported by Jalopnik. This luxury vehicle, Volvo’s newest flagship model, boasts an innovative LiDAR sensor system, an ultrasonic sensor infused body panel, eight cameras, and five radar modules.
Notably, all of these sophisticated systems come standard, and the manufacturer has already hinted at possible self-driving capabilities via over-the-air updates in the future. However, the technology is not yet available.

Volvo’s head of future vehicles, Gaurang Kalsaria, admits that the company has not decided on the offering of its new technologies. The automaker is uncertain whether it will follow in the footsteps of BMW and Volkswagen’s subscription-based business models. Kalsaria explains that Volvo has not yet made a decision regarding subscription services, despite the increasing trend in the automotive industry.
Kalsaria’s comments differ somewhat from another Volvo executive who, back in December, suggested that minor features such as heated seats would not incur additional charges, while advanced safety technologies could. Mercedes reportedly earned over $1 billion from software-based upgrades last year, suggesting a significant revenue stream.

Fortunately, the EX90’s LiDAR system, developed by Luminar, will be functional upon purchase, with no additional fees required. This innovative technology offers drivers a real-time, 360-degree view of their surroundings, extending beyond two football fields and even in complete darkness. Notably, the EX90’s LiDAR system also makes it the first hardware-ready vehicle for semi-autonomous driving. Volvo has also introduced another first, the bi-directional charging capability, allowing the vehicle to power a range of electronic devices, including other EVs and homes.
Volvo has emphasized its commitment to environmental sustainability with the EX90, incorporating 110 pounds of recycled and responsibly sourced materials in its interior, such as wood and wool. Furthermore, Volvo has introduced Nordico, a new material that covers the seats, made from recycled materials such as PET bottles and biomaterial sourced from Swedish and Finnish forests. The floor mats are also 100% recycled, including abandoned fishing nets repurposed from the ocean.

At an initial price of under $80,000, the EX90 promises to be an impressive vehicle with advanced safety features, environmental sustainability, and innovative technology. However, it is crucial to bear in mind Volvo’s indecisiveness regarding subscription services, which could prove costly for owners if not appropriately managed.
