Volvo is set to introduce the EX60, its fourth electric SUV and successor to the popular XC60, aiming to enter the competitive mid-size electric SUV segment dominated by the Tesla Model Y. The move marks Volvo’s expansion in the electric vehicle (EV) market, filling a gap in its lineup and furthering its commitment to sustainable mobility.

The EX60 will be based on an “evolution” of the SPA 2 platform, the same platform used for the EX90. This new model is part of Volvo’s broader strategy to electrify its lineup and offer a full range of electric vehicles across different segments. The company has confirmed its intention to establish a joint venture with Northvolt for EV batteries, indicating a strong focus on electric mobility.

One key feature of the EX60 will be its structural battery pack, which is expected to improve energy density and structural rigidity, leading to enhanced driveability. Reports suggest that the EX60 could achieve a range of up to 400 miles (644 km), making it competitive in the mid-size electric SUV segment.

Additionally, the EX60 is rumored to feature an 800-volt battery pack, double the voltage of the EX90, which could result in faster charging times and consistent high performance. The use of megacasting, including a mega-casted aluminium floor in the rear, will help reduce weight and improve structural integrity, potentially benefiting boot capacity as well.

Volvo’s decision to enter the mid-size electric SUV segment reflects the growing demand for electric vehicles globally. The EX60 will not only compete with the Tesla Model Y but also other upcoming models from competitors like Mercedes, Audi, BMW, and Genesis. With its focus on sustainability and innovation, Volvo aims to establish itself as a key player in the electric vehicle market.
