Volvo’s most affordable electric vehicle, the EX30, has achieved a significant milestone, with the 100,000th unit rolling off the assembly line on September 30, 2024. The production of the EX30 commenced last fall in China, and its rapid success reflects the growing demand for this compact, low-cost electric SUV.

Despite its small size, the EX30 is equipped with the advanced technology and safety features that Volvo is known for, positioning it as a “small but powerful” option within the brand’s lineup. Priced starting at around $40,000 (30,000 euros) in Europe and approximately $28,600 (200,800 yuan) in China, the EX30 is making a notable impact on the Volvo brand.

According to Dataforce, the EX30 ranked as Europe’s second-best-selling EV last month, trailing only the Tesla Model Y. While overall EV registrations in the EU saw a decline of 43.9% last month, Volvo reported a remarkable 36% year-on-year increase in vehicle sales, totaling 19,605 units. The EX30 significantly contributed to this growth, adding 6,377 vehicles to the total sales figures.

However, the EX30’s U.S. launch has been delayed, initially anticipated for later this year. The postponement comes in response to the U.S. imposing a new 100% tariff on EV imports from China, where the EX30 is manufactured. To mitigate the impact of these tariffs, Volvo plans to shift production of the EX30 to its Ghent, Belgium plant, allowing the vehicles to be exported to the U.S. The EX30 will be priced at $34,950, making it not only Volvo’s cheapest EV in the U.S. but also one of the most affordable electric cars available.

The EX30 boasts an impressive range, offering up to 295 miles (476 km) combined WLTP range. In urban settings, it can achieve up to 367 miles (592 km) of driving range, while in the U.S., the EPA-estimated range is expected to reach up to 275 miles.
