Volkswagen is set to usher in a new era for hot hatchbacks with the introduction of the ID. GTI Concept at the IAA Mobility 2023 event. This concept car pays homage to 48 years of combustion-powered GTI history while embracing Volkswagen’s electrified future.
The striking red vehicle bears a resemblance to the earlier VW ID. 2all Concept, a deliberate design choice by Volkswagen. The ID. GTI Concept showcases similar features, albeit with a distinctive black and red theme. It boasts sportier front and rear fascias, wheels inspired by the Mk1 GTI, and darker taillights. A prominent rear wing blends seamlessly with the black trim around the windows, and the grille is adorned with black and red accents, adorned with the iconic GTI branding.
Under the hood, Volkswagen remains tight-lipped about the specifics of the powertrain. However, they reveal that it features a single-motor, high-performance setup with an electronic differential lock for the front wheels. The GTI Experience Control system offers extensive customization options, allowing drivers to adjust everything from suspension settings to steering feel, sound characteristics, and even simulate shift points reminiscent of classic GTIs from the past.
Inside, the ID. GTI Concept continues the retro theme, not only with its plaid seats but also with a digital interior featuring dual screens. Volkswagen has thoughtfully incorporated multiple settings, including classic gauge displays. Drivers can relive the experience of cruising in a Mk2 GTI by configuring the digital display accordingly. For enthusiasts at places like the Nurburgring, an augmented heads-up display will project a track layout onto the windshield’s lower corner, while passengers can keep track of lap times, also displayed on the windshield.

While the production status of some of this cutting-edge technology remains uncertain, Volkswagen assures that the interior layout, featuring a 12.9-inch center screen, a 10.9-inch driver screen, and a selection of physical controls, is nearly production-ready. The automaker confidently declares that the ID. GTI Concept represents a “first glimpse of the exciting GTI future,” with a firm commitment to eventual production. Moreover, despite its performance-oriented focus, the ID. GTI Concept remains a practical hatchback, capable of accommodating five passengers and providing 17.3 cubic feet of cargo space in the boot.
As for when this concept will materialize into a production vehicle, Volkswagen remains coy on the details. However, automotive enthusiasts and curious onlookers will have the opportunity to experience this exciting glimpse into the future at IAA Mobility 2023, where the ID. GTI Concept will be proudly on display starting September 5th.
