Volkswagen through its subsidiary, Elli has signed an MoU with startup company re.alto and Elia Group in Berlin, on Friday, September 23. The three companies agreed to combine group activities to highlight their shared vision of integrating EVs into the grid.

“The rapid growth of electric vehicles reinforces the need for collaboration between the electricity and mobility sectors. We want to enable an increasing number of EV users to charge their EVs while maintaining a balance in the electrical system,” said Elia Group CEO Chris Peeters in a press release on the Elia Group website. .

Peeters added that these car batteries will also be usable in such a way that they will contribute to the overall level of energy comfort experienced by the end user. Each partner will contribute a certain area of ​​expertise for the activities they will develop.

Elia Group will contribute its expertise related to knowledge of the challenges and opportunities that will be faced by the present energy transition to the electrical system.

Elli, which is part of Volkswagen and founded in 2018, will bring her experience as a provider of charging infrastructure, mobility services, flexibility services and electricity into the partnership.

Elke Temme, CEO of Volkswagen Group Charging GmbH (Elli) and Senior Vice President of Charging & Energy Volkswagen Group Technology said that using an electric vehicle battery as a propulsion power bank provides at least three benefits, namely:

  • The benefits of the power grid, because cars can contribute to grid stability,
  • Customers can earn additional revenue with vehicle-to-grid services to explore the benefits of this consumer-centric approach, this collaboration with Elia Group is very important to us,” said Temme.

The signing of the MoU will also strengthen and expand the relationship between 50 Hertz (a subsidiary of the Elli Group in Germany) and Elli, who have been working together since 2020 on projects related to balancing the reserve market.
