German automaker Volkswagen has recently filed a patent with the German Patent and Trademark Office, proposing a novel steering wheel design that incorporates turn signals and various other features directly onto the wheel rim. This move comes after Tesla faced criticism for a similar approach in some of their car models. The patent, as reported by Car Buzz, outlines a steering wheel concept featuring tactile or physical elements, drawing parallels to a design previously filed by Ford.

According to Volkswagen, the number of buttons and controls on the steering wheel would be tailored to different vehicle models. High-end models may receive comprehensive button layouts, while entry-level models would have fewer controls, offering a simplified experience.

The proposed system will comprise two distinct groups of buttons positioned on either side of the steering wheel. The primary controls will be situated on the left, while secondary buttons will be placed on the right. When a primary control is activated, the corresponding buttons on the right side will illuminate, displaying available options. This setup allows drivers to select and control various functions, such as the turn signals and lights, as well as infotainment features like skipping songs.

Moreover, Volkswagen emphasizes that the new integrated system aims to enhance safety, reduce clutter on the steering wheel, and potentially lead to cost savings during manufacturing. By streamlining the control layout, Volkswagen envisions a more intuitive driving experience for their customers.

It’s worth noting that the implementation of this patented steering wheel design will be contingent on regulatory approval and feedback from consumers. As the automotive industry continues to explore innovative ways to enhance vehicle features, Volkswagen’s new concept represents an intriguing step towards the evolution of steering wheel designs.
