Volkswagen delivered approximately 383,100 fully electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide in 2024, a 2.7% decline from the 393,700 EVs delivered in 2023, according to company data. Despite this decline, the German automaker remained the top electric vehicle brand in its home country, with 62,253 of these EVs registered in Germany.
While global EV sales dropped, the brand’s performance in Germany showed a positive trend. Volkswagen captured 16.3% of the new electric car market in the country, a 2.8 percentage-point increase over 2023. “Around the globe, 2024 was a difficult year with sluggish economic activity, political challenges and intense competition – particularly in China. Yet, we are beginning the new year with optimism,” said Martin Sander, Volkswagen’s Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales.
Despite the overall drop in deliveries, Volkswagen emphasized its ongoing efforts to diversify its model range. “Not only do we have attractive products, but we are meeting the needs of a wide variety of customer groups with our extensive, diverse model range that covers all drive types,” Sander added.
In the German market, Volkswagen’s ID. series continued to perform well, with the ID.4/ID.5 (combined) ranking third with 21,611 registrations, followed closely by the ID.3 with 20,101 registrations. The Cupra Born and the ID.7 (including the Tourer) rounded out the top six. However, the Tesla Model Y led the market with 29,896 units, far outpacing VW’s offerings.
Since the introduction of the ID. family in 2019, Volkswagen has sold over 1.35 million electric vehicles globally, with the ID.3 accounting for around 500,000 of those sales.
