Volkswagen (VW) is reportedly planning to reduce the base list price of its revised ID.3 below the 40,000 euro threshold, according to German media. The ID.3 is currently available in Germany starting from 43,995 euros, but VW’s aim is to bring the cost down. The price increase was introduced in December, following a streamlining of the ID.3 range and announcement of a revised version. The new edition was recently launched, but the price remains undisclosed. The starting price for ID.3 Pro with a 58 kWh battery currently stands at 43,995 euros.
Reports suggest that VW wants to lower the price of the ID.3, following the massive price cuts made by Tesla. However, VW representatives, including CEO Oliver Blume, have previously spoken out against the price war. The German publication Handelsblatt cites insiders, stating that VW wants to reduce the price of its ID.3, though it remains unclear whether this decision is in response to Tesla’s price cuts or not.
It is worth noting that Blume won’t need to revise his stance on the price war, as the basic version of Tesla’s Model 3 already costs almost the same as an ID.3 Pro. It is worth mentioning that VW’s reduction of the ID.3’s price is not an official price cut, but rather the new price for a reintroduced model.

Due to the semiconductor shortage, Volkswagen decided to utilize available components for higher-priced models with larger batteries. The ID.3 base model with a 45 kWh battery (originally priced under 30,000 euros) was taken off the market, although it is expected to return soon. However, the price of the model remains unknown.
Sources suggest that VW will disclose prices by the end of April at the latest, just before the pre-sales launch. It remains unclear whether this will also apply to the 45 kWh model or whether the entry-level variant will launch later. In any case, VW has already confirmed that a VW ID.3 with a smaller battery than the 54 kWh version will be made available.
