Toyota has introduced new portable hydrogen cartridges that could be used as fuel cells for electric vehicles (EVs) and home applications, marking another step in its broader carbon neutrality strategy. The announcement was made during the Japan Mobility Show Bizweek 2024, held in Chiba Prefecture, where companies showcased emerging technologies and discussed potential collaborations.
These hydrogen cartridges, designed to be easily swappable, offer a potential solution for extending the driving range of EVs or trucks. “Travel without pitstops,” is how one report described the convenience of these fuel cells, which could eliminate the need for frequent recharging stops. The cartridges are portable enough to be carried in a special backpack, allowing them to be swapped in vehicles or used on long journeys.
In addition to automotive uses, Toyota demonstrated the technology’s versatility by powering a cooking stove at the event, in partnership with Rinnai. The company emphasized that hydrogen can also provide backup power for homes during outages or be used for everyday tasks like cooking. “Given hydrogen’s highly explosive nature and the fears associated with using the fuel, the company is working towards making it a familiar and safe energy source by introducing its use for day-to-day functions,” Toyota stated.
In a press release, Toyota highlighted its multi-faceted approach to carbon neutrality, noting that hydrogen will play a key role in the future. The company aims to foster partnerships and drive technological innovation to contribute to energy stability and environmental sustainability. “By fostering new partnerships and driving technological innovation, Toyota aims to strengthen its efforts to help create a sustainable future,” the automaker added.
