Toyota, one of the world’s leading automakers, has announced its strategic intentions to introduce a new lineup of battery electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with next-generation batteries on a global scale by 2026. The development and production of these EVs will be spearheaded by Toyota’s newly established EV-focused unit, BEV Factory.
In an effort to push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, Toyota is also actively working on the mass production of solid-state batteries, aiming to commercialize this advanced battery technology by 2027-2028. Solid-state batteries offer potential benefits such as increased energy density, improved safety, and faster charging times.
Takero Kato, President of BEV Factory, expressed Toyota’s ambitious target of achieving a remarkable driving range of 1,000 km (621 miles) for their upcoming EVs. This range surpasses the long-range version of Tesla’s Model 3, which currently offers approximately 700 km. Toyota’s commitment to delivering exceptional driving range is driven by their vision to redefine the future of electric vehicles.
“We want to change the future with BEVs,” stated Kato during a recent presentation posted on Toyota’s official YouTube channel. “From 2026, we will globally launch our next-generation battery EVs, offering a comprehensive lineup to customers.”
BEV Factory, established in May, has set an ambitious goal of producing approximately 1.7 million electric vehicles by 2030. This substantial production capacity demonstrates Toyota’s determination to meet the rising demand for electric mobility and contribute to the worldwide shift towards sustainable transportation.
Toyota has outlined its broader goals for electric vehicle adoption, aiming to sell 1.5 million EVs annually by 2026 and ultimately achieving a remarkable 3.5 million units by 2030. This target represents around one-third of Toyota’s projected global sales volume, underlining the company’s commitment to becoming a major player in the rapidly evolving EV market.
Toyota’s recent progress in the electric vehicle sector is evident, as evidenced by its sales figures. In April, the company achieved a significant milestone by selling 8,584 EVs worldwide, including its luxury brand, Lexus. This accounted for more than 1% of Toyota’s global sales in a single month, marking an impressive step forward for the company in the electric vehicle market.
As Toyota positions itself for a future dominated by electric mobility, the company’s focus on next-generation battery technology and global expansion of its electric vehicle lineup signals its determination to lead the industry in innovation and sustainable transportation solutions.
