Tesla, the renowned electric vehicle and clean energy company, has officially announced that Tom Zhu will be taking on the role of Senior Vice President of Automotive, according to a recent SEC filing. This is a significant promotion for Zhu, who previously served as the head of Giga Shanghai, the company’s massive manufacturing plant in China. The announcement confirms rumors that have been circulating for some time regarding Zhu’s growing influence within the company.

Zhu has been with Tesla since 2014, and has worked his way up the ranks through various operational roles, including Vice President of Greater China, where he oversaw the construction and operations of the Shanghai factory. Under his leadership, the factory steadily ramped up production of the Model 3 and Model Y, and increased its income by over 100% in consecutive years between 2019 and 2021.

“Mr. Zhu has years of experience and the knowledge to fulfill his duties as Tesla’s Vice President of Automotive,” wrote Tesla in its SEC filing. “He holds a bachelor’s degree of commerce in information technology from the Auckland University of Technology and an M.B.A. from Duke University.”

Zhu’s promotion to Senior Vice President of Automotive was announced in April 2023, and his new role will see him take on a leadership position within Tesla’s North American sales, service, and deliveries operations. This is a significant move for Zhu, who has quickly risen through the ranks at Tesla.

During Tesla’s Investor Day in 2023, Zhu appeared alongside Drew Baglino, Tesla’s Senior Vice President of Powertrain and Energy Engineering. He spoke about the company’s gigafactories and how they could be used to produce more cars faster. The event provided a platform for Zhu to showcase his knowledge and expertise, and he was introduced to the audience as the head of North American sales, service, and deliveries.
