A new Model Y with updated design, enhanced powertrain, and refreshed interior decoration is expected to be released next year. Internally called ‘Project Juniper’, this mid-cycle upgrade of Tesla’s Model Y will follow the new ‘Highland’ Model 3 release in September this year.
According to Sandy Munro’s analysis, the manufacturing cost of a Model Y is US$39,393, but it is expected to decrease further with the release of the 2024 Model Y upgrade. Tesla is reportedly working on a new body design, interior decoration, and powertrain upgrades for this upgrade, following the example of the ‘Project Highland‘ Model 3 refresh.

Elon Musk is focusing on improving redundancies in design and engineering, as well as streamlining production to maintain margins amid the EV price war that Tesla initiated in January. While the details of the ‘Juniper’ redesign are unclear, the new Model 3 is expected to have a more minimalistic interior design that emphasizes practical features, with a large central display console being the only notable addition.
Sources suggest that the 2024 Model Y upgrade will be released in October next year, about a year after the Model 3 ‘Highland’ redesign. As the Model Y has been a popular vehicle in many markets, Tesla will likely introduce the Juniper upgrade’s manufacturing process simultaneously across multiple factories.
