Tesla has achieved a “Vehicle Privacy Protection” certification in China, recognizing the automaker’s compliance with the country’s rigorous automotive data security standards, as announced by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and the National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team/Coordination Center of China.

Tesla China’s data privacy practices include the anonymization of external facial information and a default setting that disables data collection from in-cabin cameras, aiming to bolster user privacy. “Tesla has put in place measures to ensure the protection of personal information in a way that aligns with the highest privacy standards,” stated a company spokesperson.
According to Tesla China, the data collected within the vehicles is processed internally, reducing risks associated with external data transmission. Prominent notifications alert users when personal data is processed, enhancing transparency and privacy control for Tesla drivers.

Industry analysts suggest that the certification may help strengthen Tesla’s reputation in China, especially among potential buyers in the public and private sectors who prioritize data security. “This move could improve Tesla’s credibility in the Chinese automotive market,” remarked a privacy expert. The certification could also support Tesla’s long-term objective of introducing its Full Self-Driving software in China, pending regulatory approval and further data privacy compliance.
