Tesla Model Y Refresh Spotted in China, Hinting at Upcoming Design Changes

Camouflaged Tesla Model Y vehicles have been sighted in China, potentially indicating an anticipated design refresh for the electric crossover, which follows the recent updates to the Model 3. Reports surfaced last year that Tesla was planning a 2024 Model Y update, internally known as ā€œProject Juniper.ā€

Tesla has previously downplayed the likelihood of a redesign within 2023, with CEO Elon Musk stating that no Model Y refresh was planned for this year. The emphasis on timing led some analysts to speculate that a revamp might still be on track for early 2024.

Recent sightings of the camouflaged Model Y prototypes in both China and California come amid reports suggesting the vehicle could enter trial production this week at Teslaā€™s Gigafactory in Shanghai.

A source familiar with the matter indicated that the refresh may include redesigned front and rear exteriors, along with new interior features paralleling updates in the latest Model 3. A leaked image showed a possible red light bar between the taillights, which would add ā€œTeslaā€ branding across the back.

Additionally, Tesla may introduce a 7-seat version of the Model Y specifically for the Chinese market. While the Model Y refresh appears to be starting in Shanghai, it is expected to be part of a broader global release.
