Images reportedly showing Tesla’s upcoming Model Y “Juniper” update have surfaced online, hinting at potential design changes for the popular electric crossover. While these images remain unconfirmed, they suggest that the best-selling vehicle may soon receive some notable enhancements.

In March 2023, amid news of Tesla’s Model 3 “Highland” refresh, Reuters reported that the company was also working on an update for the Model Y, codenamed “Juniper.” Given the similarities between the first-generation Model 3 and Model Y, many in the EV community speculated that the “Juniper” update might incorporate the reengineered Model 3’s upgrades into the Model Y.

Leaked photos shared on the r/TeslaMotors subreddit reveal potential differences between the reengineered Model 3 and the “Juniper” update. One image shows what appears to be a red light bar with the word “Tesla” on the rear hatch of the supposed Model Y “Juniper” prototype, a feature not present in the reengineered Model 3 sedan. Another leaked image suggests that the Model Y “Juniper” will have a similar interior to the updated Model 3.

Despite the excitement generated by these images, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that there is no “refresh” planned for the Model Y this year. In response to sightings of wrapped Model Y units, Musk emphasized on social media platform X that “Tesla continuously improves its cars, so even a car that is 6 months newer will be a little better.”

The Model Y has been a significant success, becoming the world’s best-selling car by volume last year. If the rumored update is introduced and well-received by consumers, the Model Y could maintain its position as one of the world’s top-selling vehicles, electric or otherwise.
