Tesla’s Model Y has secured the title of the best-selling vehicle in Europe for September, achieving this milestone for the second time this year. According to data from market researcher Dataforce, the electric SUV sold 28,680 units during the month, surpassing its nearest competitors by approximately 8,000 units, as reported by Automotive News Europe.
The Model Y’s sales showed a slight decline of about 3.6 percent compared to the previous month. Notably, sales figures from Slovakia and Hungary are yet to be reported, which may impact the rankings for second place. Currently, the Volkswagen Tiguan and the Renault Clio are vying closely for this position, with sales of 20,763 and 20,306 units, respectively.
Traditionally, Tesla experiences lower sales figures in the first month of each quarter, making the September results somewhat unexpected in this context. In contrast, August witnessed a significant drop in electric vehicle (EV) sales, with a decline of about 44 percent across Europe, while overall car sales fell by around 18 percent.
Looking at the year-to-date figures, the Dacia Sandero leads the market with 203,474 units sold, followed by the Volkswagen Golf and Renault Clio, with 165,370 and 162,021 units, respectively. The Volkswagen T-Roc and the Tesla Model Y round out the top five, with sales of 156,803 and 155,428 units, respectively.
The Model Y’s ascent in sales is notable, having ranked eighth in August and ninth in July. This trend reflects its growing popularity as the year progresses. Last year, the Model Y finished as the best-selling vehicle in Europe, and it remains a strong contender to repeat this achievement in 2024.
