Tesla is introducing a feature that allows owners to transfer their Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities from a previous vehicle to the upcoming Cybertruck. This development enables customers who have purchased FSD for an existing Tesla vehicle to apply that investment toward the all-electric pickup, potentially saving them thousands of dollars.
Previously, Tesla required owners to buy the Full Self-Driving suite outright when purchasing a new vehicle, which met with dissatisfaction from those who had already invested up to $15,000 in the semi-autonomous technology. In response to customer feedback, Tesla began offering the option to transfer FSD between vehicles last year, but this feature was available only for a limited time.
According to CEO Elon Musk, the pricing of FSD is currently set at a fraction of its anticipated future value; however, this rationale did not resonate well with many consumers. The company has periodically enabled transfers of Full Self-Driving capabilities, including twice in 2024 alone.
The latest update allows owners to transfer their FSD from any existing Tesla model—such as the Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y—directly to the Cybertruck, a capability that was previously unavailable. This transfer option will remain accessible until the end of the year.
Prior to this development, Cybertruck owners would have been required to purchase the FSD suite anew at a cost of $8,000, adding to the overall price of the vehicle.
