Photos posted on Twitter by users @BLKMDL3 and @klwtts indicate that Tesla has started shipping Model Y vehicles equipped with its latest Hardware 4 computer from the Fremont, California factory. These images reveal the presence of upgraded front-facing and side-mounted cameras, which were previously seen on Model S and Model X vehicles.
While some vehicles on the lots still possess the previous generation Hardware 3 computer, it appears that Tesla is gradually transitioning to the HW4 for all its production vehicles.
Exciting news! Model Y are now shipping with Hardware 4! I just went to the delivery lot to see and found a couple. Here are some photos I just got of the cameras on a brand new red Performance Y and AWD Model Y. The lot is filled with new cars awaiting delivery! @elonmusk #Tesla pic.twitter.com/m4Xyga0tN5

Earlier this year, Tesla introduced the first Model X SUVs in the United States equipped with its latest Autopilot computer, also known as FSD2. However, one customer who received such a vehicle reported several malfunctions, including non-functional basic features such as cruise control, parking sensors, Autopilot, Navigate on Autopilot, FSD Beta Visualization preview, and the rear backup camera. The status of these issues remains unknown, as the customer did not provide an update on the matter.
It is important to note that retrofitting older Tesla vehicles with the new self-driving computer is not feasible due to the different form factor of the unit and the additional cameras and sensors required. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously stated that retrofitting older cars would not be economically viable.
The new Hardware 4 computer from Tesla retains the Samsung Exynos architecture but offers enhanced performance compared to its predecessor. It features a higher CPU core count, with 20 cores per side, capable of reaching a maximum frequency of 2.35 GHz and an idle speed of 1.37 GHz. Moreover, the system incorporates improved, high-definition cameras and a new “Phoenix” radar to enhance object detection capabilities.
Initially planned for the Cybertruck, the Hardware 4 computer will now make its debut in the Model Y vehicles. The launch of the all-electric pickup truck has faced multiple delays, and it is now anticipated to be released later this year.
