Shell has recently installed a 400 kW DC charger at the Markham Moor truckstop in Nottinghamshire, UK, specifically reserved for electric trucks. The new charging station features two connections, allowing simultaneous charging at 200 kW each, catering to the needs of heavy-duty electric vehicles.
While the charger is likely equipped with CCS plugs, there is currently no mention of compatibility with the megawatt charging system (MCS), which has yet to be officially standardized.
This strategic location sees over 8,000 heavy-duty trucks passing daily, although only around 300 of these are electric vehicles in the UK. To enhance convenience for operators, Shell offers a ‘book and charge’ system, enabling users to reserve a charging bay in advance. The site is accessible 24/7, equipped with amenities such as a café, restrooms, showers, and guarded parking facilities. Payments can be made using the Shell Card.
Euan Moir, Head of UK Fleet Solutions at Shell, highlighted the importance of this installation, stating, “The future of commercial road transport will look mostly electric. That electric future is already coming to fruition in the UK.” He emphasized that providing a seamless charging experience at the Markham Moor site is essential for supporting transport companies during the ongoing energy transition.
This initiative aligns with Shell’s commitment to facilitating the shift toward electric commercial vehicles, addressing the growing demand for efficient and reliable charging infrastructure as the industry evolves.
