French startup Seederal is set to disrupt the farming industry with the market launch of its groundbreaking electric tractor in 2025. The tractor boasts 118 kW of power and an impressive operating time of 8 to 12 hours on a single charge, making it a viable alternative to traditional diesel tractors.
One of the key advantages of the Seederal electric tractor is its rapid charging capability, with the vehicle able to fully charge within just two hours. This, coupled with lower energy and maintenance costs, positions the electric tractor as a more cost-effective option over a seven-year operating period compared to its diesel counterpart when used for 500 to 700 hours annually.
Seederal’s co-founder, Arthur Rivoal, addressed common industry skepticism regarding the feasibility of electrifying tractors, stating, “Traditional manufacturers claim that you need 13 tonnes of batteries to electrify a tractor. We don’t believe that.” This bold statement underscores Seederal’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in its design.
At seven tonnes, the Seederal prototype weighs slightly less than comparable combustion tractors, despite its impressive power output. Rivoal explained that the key to this weight reduction lies in the integration of the battery chassis, which maximizes battery density and efficiency.
The company’s unique approach to electrifying tractors is expected to face resistance in an industry where diesel-powered vehicles have long been the norm. However, Seederal’s innovative technology and cost-effective solution could pave the way for a significant shift towards electric farming equipment in the near future.
